Exploring Flexibility and Beyond with Coach Micah Walters (Ep 107)

Season #2

Host Kelly welcomes flexibility coach Micah Walters, whom she met at his Backbend Breakthroughs workshop in New Orleans, to discuss both entrepreneurship and safe, contortion-level flexibility training. Micah shares his background in artistic gymnastics under old-school Soviet coaching, classical and competitive dance, and later performing contortion with acrobatics, handstands, and aerial. He explains how his kinesiology, PT, yoga, and Pilates education led him to a method that prioritizes strength, alignment, spinal integrity, nervous-system regulation, and long warm-ups—especially for hypermobile students—rather than pushing adults into extreme ranges. They talk about real-time coaching (in person or via Zoom), longevity and choosing safer backbends, and why flexibility without strength can destabilize joints. Micah also describes his digital nomad business model, language immersion abroad, and upcoming offerings including a December retreat in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, an on-demand platform, one-on-ones, and workshops.

From the Episode:

  • " And looking back on it knowing what I know now, I can see just how dangerous what we were doing was, just how crazy it was, compared to what we know now about biomechanics and about just the human body and how it's meant to move and how it's meant to tear and rebuild in order to make growth. We were just tearing and tearing and tearing with really no opportunity to rebuild and to recover."
  • " You can't just take somebody off the street and push them into a backbend or push them into a split. You really need to develop their own awareness of their body through conditioning, through breathwork, through mindfulness, and, it produces a much more sustainable and healthy result."
  • " I think that's the best thing that a yoga practice has to offer is that connection to your nervous system and tending to it on purpose, not just as a last resort, but as a part of preparing for the practice, you know?"
  • " I always tell people at the end of a workshop, "If there's only one thing you take away from this workshop, let it be the first 20 minutes of what we did. Let it be the warmup that you bring away and repeat and come back to," because it really matters so much."
  • "   You're doing these things looking forward to mitigate risk. It's like insurance."
  • "I'm hosting a retreat in Oaxaca, Mexico, in a town called Puerto Escondido, and it's December 12th through the 19th. It's a flexibility immersion with yours truly, Micah Walters. It's gonna be just under a week of excursions, two classes a day. It's at a retreat center called Casa Chango, which means the House of the Monkey."
