Justice and Generosity: A Conversation with Hillar Moore (Ep 104)

Season #2

Kelly reunites with Hillar Moore, East Baton Rouge Parish district attorney, by surprising him with the old Minolta camera Moore gave her at 19—an early doorway into the host’s decades-long creative career. Moore shares how cameras and crime-scene work as a young DA investigator helped shape his path from LSU missteps to criminal justice, law school, defense work, and eventually becoming DA. They discuss generosity, mentorship, and Moore’s philosophy of second chances—along with the high-stakes risk of deciding who gets one when guns and victims are involved. Moore explains patterns behind group violence, the pressures of an underfunded “hamburger-flipping” justice system, and why early childhood education and wraparound family support are key to changing outcomes. He also describes his massive “Justice Farms” garden, plant-centric journey, hot sauces, and giving produce back to the community.

From the Episode:

  • "   And now in the position where I see a lot of kids that make some really bad mistakes, and then be able to give them a second chance..."
  • "  ...how do you give a second chance to someone who's raped someone, someone who's shot, killed someone? I'm not saying that can't happen in some cases, but you always have to ask, what would the parents of the other person say? What does the other person say? What does the community say? What do they expect?"
  • " ...when you go to law school, they take your brain, and they screw it all up, and they turn it around, and they make you think of things that you would not normally think of, and take the other side, right?"
  • " So the plants don't talk back- ... and they don't kill each other, don't go to jail."
  • " ...also have moved on to hot peppers and make my own hot sauce...and my farm is called Justice Farms."
  • " You cannot ever give up on anybody. Someone has value. I don't care who they are. Someone has value, and your kids will shock you and surprise you."
